COMPENSATION CLAIMS

(British Official Wirelesa.)

Britain Negotiating with Japan

(Eeceived 22, 8.45 a.m.) EUGBY, Dec. 21. Questioned in the House of Commons, Mr Anthony Eden, Foreign Minister, said that the principle of pecuniary compensation for casualties caused by Japanese troops to British soldiers and sailors had been fully accepted by Japan. The actual details were still under discussion. What remained to be decided was the amounts and to whom they should be paid. Eegarding damage to British property and interests, there would be a large number of claims in addition to those regarding which representations had been made to Tokio, but it was not possible yet to formulate or even to verify all claims. Asked whether Japan would be responsible for its soldiers' plunderings, Mr Eden replied: "That is precisely one of the ltems under which claims may be made."
