DESTROYER MANOEUVRES

Speculation in America (Eeceiveil 22, 11.15 a.m.) SAD PEDEO (California), Dec. 21. Nine destroyers anchored off the Pacifie Fleet base after a very hasty trip under secret orders. Navy officials refused information, while the Navy Department at Washington said it was a routine periodie manoeuvre. Some quarters suggested that it was a preliminary to a destroyer transfer to the Hawaiian Islands. Other quarters suggested that the Navy was testing the speed with which units can raise anchor and steam off.
