Santa Claus Visits Children in the Park

WAIPAWA, Last Night. Father Christmas arrived in Waipawa shortly after two o'clock on Saturday afternoon in. the traditional sleigh, which was drawn by a galaxy of fairies and a guard of honour daintily attired. The parade came in state from the Municipal Theatre to the Nellie Jull Park, where a crowd of soveral hundred children and adults were awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. The Mayor, Mr C. G. E. Harker, extended a civic welcome to Santa and his escort, and his remarks were supplemefited by a short address by Mr H. M. Christie, M.P. Balloens, ice cream, and free picture tickets (donated oy Mr T. Angell) were then distributed, also packets of sweets and toys. The escorting party were presented with sweets donated by Mr W. H. Rathbone. This party comprised Jean and Betty Kittow, Pauline Hark er, Violet Gunn, June Gunn, Lorraine Yaughan, Billy Bathbone, June Rathbone, Beverley Rathbone, Maureen Bolton, Barbara Taylor, Joan Pinlay, Mavis Hunt, Pam Edwards, Audrcy Dick, Isoabel Petersen, Marie Peterseri, Barbara Towers, June Booker. The function, which was organised by the Chamber of Commerce, in connection with their Christmas shopping effort, was a unique success and a distinct credit to the committee of shop assistants and other who assisted in the work of organising. Among these may be mentioned Mrs Towers, jnr,, Mrs Fox, Miss McKay, Mr Yenner and Mr Rosenbeek. Santa and his escort paid a return visit in the evening, and their progress through the town was watched with great interest by a verv large crowd.
