Christmas Cheer at Pukeora. Christmas cheer was taken , to the patients at Pukeora Sanatorium cn Saturday night by a party from Dannevirke. Sweets% fruit, cigarettes and other presents were brought by the party, which was organised by the Dannevirke branch of the Red Cross Society, represented by Mr and Mrs H. E. Young, Miss Scott and othons. The W.D.F.U., represented by Miss Porteous, sent presents for the women patients, Transport was provided by the Dannevirke Rotary Club, through Rotarian T. Roake. Mr W. Te Tau's orchestra accompanied the party and played popular selections in one of the wards, afterwards providing musie for a dance in the lounge. Each patient was visited and given a present, after which the visitors had supper with the patients. They also left numerous parcels for distribution later on. Porangahau Runner's Success. f A close fourth in the S80 yards race on the Empire Games Trial programme at Wellington recently was gained by Ralph Longley, the 19-year-old Porangahau runner. Longley 's time was 2mins. lsec. He distinguished himself jn running events while at Wellington College, but he is now working on his xather's farmt so that his time and facilities for training are limited. He competes at the weekly meetings in Napier but does not arrive, after a three-hour car journey, until half an hour before he races, with the result that he is not at his top form. Carols by the Band. The Waipukurau Munieipal Band hegan its carolliug programme at Hatuma last evening. The band will play carols in other parts of the district on Wednesday next and on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
