RECORD YEAR FOR AVIATION

H.B. and East Coast Aero Gub ANNUAL MEETING The growing interest in flying li Hawke 's Bay was remarked by the predent of the Hawke's Bay and East Coast Aero Club Mr. P. Barker, at the annual meeting at Bridge Pa last even-i ing, when he mentioned that the past year had been a record one for the club in the amount of flying ddne. Other clubs had reported a eimilat growth of interest, and it was pleasing to note that the club was performing so well the task for which it had been formed. The new system of training pilots for the Civil Reserve, he added, was also working well. The trainees allotted to the club showed promise of being excellent pilots, and were a very good type of young man. The club was handieapped by tho lack of machines, but two additional aircraft were on the way — a Tiger Moth, the gift to the club of the Government, and a Porterfield monoplane from Ameriea, both being expeeted in January. During the year the approaches to the field had been improved immensely by the removal of treea from the golf links boundary, 'making approach much safer for fliers. The enterprise of two members of the club, Mr. P. van Asch," who had inaugurated an aerial mapping business with headquarters at the club,. and Mr. E. A. Barker, who had set up in busl* ness as an aircraft distributor, alsO with headquarters at the club, was to be commended. During the year, the former instructor, Flight-Lieut. I. E. Eawnsley, had left to take up the position of chief instructor to the Wellington Club, and his successor, Mr. E. F. Harvie, wa# now doing good work, and was very popular with the pupils.
