DUNEDIN j Last Night. At a meeting at Dunedin on Saturda/ afternoon on the Caledonian ground the higklight was a special mil« handicap arranged as an Empire James trial between W. A. C. Pullar md T. Allen, both provisionally sCi6ct•d in the New Zealand team. Both were together on the back ,iark in the race, which was run on a track that was dead after two days' .ain, while (Aere was a breeze which lid not make things any easier for the unners. The backmarkers had the race in hand at the bell after being together all the way, and then Pullar made a desperate attempt to eiear out over the last lap, but Allen went with him and, running on the outside, triad hard to pass Pullar. The pair raced stride for stride over the last furlong, but Pullar drew away slightly and led into Ihe straiglit by barely two yards. The time was 4min. 22 2-5sec., a reaiarkable performance under such conditions, while Allen 's time was 4™^, 22 4-5sec. Pullar and Allen both remrded time 9sec. faster than that in the Dominion trial in Wellington. The lap times were: — Pullar: 64sec., fiSsec., 69s«c., 64 2-5sec.
