HARBOUR DREDGING

Progress of Work at Napier ENGINEER'S REPORT The dredge Whakarire, since eo .imencing operations at the Breakwater harbour, has reached an output exceeding l,uuJ,000 tons of material. At to-day's meeting of the Napier Harbour Board the engineer, Mr G. W. B. Lowson, repcrted upon the progress of dredgiug and wharf construction as follow: — Dredger "Whakarire." Except for cleaning up the berths at the root of wharf No. 3, which is now under construction, the board 's buelcet dredger | Whakarire was steadily engaged deepening around the site of the large No. 4 wharf in suecessive stagcs to the final Ioav water berthage depth of 35. feet. The improved dredgiug- material now being encountered since the removal over the whole area of the bouider stratum is reCected in the increased r?turns, which are 38,475 tons for the month. Wharf No. 3: The construction of the reinforeed-conerete wharf No. 3 is proceeding satis^uetorily, the piles of pier No. 6 now being driven, thereb/ advancing the head of the work to a total distance of 80 feet from the seaward face of the abutment. All piledriving henceforth is in dredged country, so that tne rate of progress now attained should in future be still further increased. The Winget weigh-batch concrete mixing plant has arrivec from England and is being assembled in readiness for commencing the construction of the wharf sup'erstructure. Wharf No. 4: Although work on wharf No. 3 has up till now .been of the more importance, steps are nevertheless being taken to brmg the construction of Avhavf No. 4 under way as early as possible in tlie New Year. The main raihvay lines have already been diverted from the new pile-yard and re-laid in their final location as far as the weighbridge, and the exeavation of the high ground to the level of the yard is ■under way. A start has also just been jnade under water to clear the sitc of ihe abutment and the root of the wharf by means of tiie large Sauerman dragline in order to facilitate construction when pue-driving commc-nces.
