Annual Breaking-up Ceremony The ailnual breaking-up ceremony was held at the Mangateretere School on Friday afternoon, when there was a big gathering of parents for the prize-giving. The principal speaker was the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, who was introduced by Mr T. R. Burden, chairman of the school committee. Talcing as part of his theme the Maori proverb, "Iti te kopara, kai takirikiri ana i runga i te Kahikatea," (though the kopara be a small bird, it reaches the highest branches of the Kahikatea), the Bishop said that, just as the bird lives4 on the lower branches of the tree, rises to the higher branches, and eventutally reaches the top, so it was with life of the child as its devel'opment expanded. He urged the pupils to persevere and study hard so that they could reach the top of the tree. There were many important positions that were to be filled, he pointed out, and he urged them to make good use of the present opportunities, so fhat they could befit themselves in the life to come. The speaker congratulated the headmaster and staff upon the excellence of the work of the school during the past year and said uat he had noted ample evidence of the efficiency of the school. Apart from the high standard of the work of the pupils in their classrooms, he said that Mangateretere had reason to bo prord of the appearance of their school, and to the committee, staff and children he extended congratulations. That their work had been noted was indicated on a recent trip he made to i the west coast where oue man liad men(ioned tlie beautiful surroundings of Mangateretere School, though the name was not known, the school merely being described as "just past Hastings on tho main road'to Napier." Bishop Bennett coneluded his address by explainiDg the significance of Christmas Day, and made a plea for greater attention to spiritual teaching. The following honours prizes were presented: — Dux. — James Crooks; runner-up, Neumea Tomoana. Sewing prizes. — Standards 5 and 6: Myrtle Anderson. Standards 3 and 4: Gladys Christinson. Mr W. TucKer's essay prizes (Coronation). — Standards 5 and 6: Eileen Allison 1, P. Tichborne 2, Hinea Nikira 3. Standards 3 and 4: Jean Burc. n 1, Lydia Hamlin 2, Rene Pullen 3. Standard 6 certifieates. — Eileen Allison, Neumea Tomoana, Ann Roberts, Hinea Nikera, Daphne Cooper, James Crooks, William Wilson, Cedrie Gillespie. The remainder of the ceremony was taken up by a display and musical programme on the part of the pupils, and afternoon-tea was provided by the ladies' committee. |
