NEW BRIDGES AT APPROACHES TO WAIPUKURAU

Waipukurau 's traffic bridge, which forms the entrance to the town from the north, is one of the most striking architectural features of Central Hawke 's Bay. It was erected in 1935 at a cost of approximately £14,000. The "bridge was designed by the Public Works Department and erected by a Wellington firm under tbe supervisicn of the Patangata County Council as controlling authority. It is built of reinforced concrete, its 90C-feet length heing divided into 20 spans of 45 feet each. The approaches are curved. The overall width is 30 feet^ which includes a 22-feet roadway and a 4-feet wide footpath. The bridge replaced an old wooden bridge which was opened in 1889 and did service for 47 years. A similar structure is at present under construction a mile or so from Waipukurau on the main highway from Hastings. This bridge is heing huilt to eliminate a dangerous level crossing, and it will also be a particularly imposing structure when completed.
