This mountain-fed shingle-bedded river is crossed on the road from Napier to Taupo. It lies immediately on the Taupo side of the Turangakumu Hill, and part of the steep descent can be seen in the picture above. The road at this spot is particularly steep and dangerous, though in recent years many improvements have been carried out which, however, have not completely eliminated the need for caution.
