■ WELLINGTON, Last Night. j Qn account of the approaching exhaustion of the Jamea State coal minei near Greymouth, it has become neces-^ sary to open up a new mine in the; nine-mile area of the State coal reserve,. said the Minister of Mines_ Hon. P. C.; Webb, this evening. Two seama of excellent coal Were proved by diamond drilling, and it is estimated the quantity of coal contained in the area proved is approximateljr six million tons. . The opening up of the new mine involves the driving of four stone tunnels together with a return airway, which necessitates appreximately 7500 feet of driving in addition to tunnels. A roperoad approximately 2150 feet in length has been built. ! Concrete buildings have been ?onstructed for housing of the plant S-hd a large bathhouse fitted with up-to-date equipment' is to be built on a site near the entrance to the main drive. It is anticipated coal from this mine will be available to supply the market for the winter of 1939. The present bins and sereening arrangements at the James mine are to be replaced by an up-to-date struQture -in steel and concrete and the screening arrangements . will provide for four sizes of coal to cater for domestic use and industrial purposes.
