THE FALL OF NANKING

-Press Association.J"

No Military Significance RESISTANCE TO CONTINUE

(By Telegraph-

WELLINGTON, This Day. The Chinese Consul has received the following cablegram from Hanltow: — ".Marshal Chiang Kai-shelc's statement from the field at headquarters declares that China will continue to resist the Japanese invasion notwithstanding the evacuation of Nanking. The withdrawal from Nankihg has no effect upon the Government 's policy of resisting Japanese aggression, but will strengthen the national determination to continue fighting. "Since the seat of government has been moyed elsewhere, Nanking, has neither politieal nor military significance. Chiang has therefore ordered the withdrawal of his forces from Nanking to other lines in accordance with his plan to withdraw whenever the enemy's superior armament makes it unnecessary for too great a sacrifice. "Chinese mobile units are active behind the Japanese lines on the Yangtse delta. It is reported that Chinese troops have recaptured Taichang, northeast of Quinshan."
