RICE-GROWING IN H.B.
Progress of Hastings Plots Satisfactory growth has been noted in the experimental beds of rice that have been laid down at Cornwall Park, Hastings. One of the beds has developed considerably more than the other, there being about nine inches of growth now in this bed, as against but an inch or two in the other, which is situated very close to the stream and receives considerably more water than the other. The experiment has revealed so far that ifc is possibly to germinate rice seed in this district, and, further, that for the germination process too much moisture is a retarding factor, though later it is necessary to practically immerse the rice in water for quite a number of weeks, The main issue to be ascertained is whether it is possible to harvest rice, but this point will not be deeided for some months yet. In the meantime, Mr J. G. C. Mackenzie, Borough Superintendent of Reserves, is keeping a watchful eye on the growth and development of the miniature rice fields.
