FRUIT RUSH STARTS
Big Consignments Leaving Hastings The first-Of-the-season rush in the marketing of fruit, particularly the early varieties of peaches, has set in, and big consignments leaVe Hastings Jaily for Wellington and other centres throughout the North Island. There is a possibility that the special fruit train from Hawke's Bay will be introduced earlier this year than usual. "The fruit is coming to hand in good quantities~now," commented Mr J. P. Cassidy, stationmaster at Hastings, this aiorning, when questioned regarding the possibility of the fruit train.j being introduced before Christmas this year instead of after as has been the case in the past. "I have heard that there has been talk of the train being put on earlier but I have not received any ofiicial advice on the matter. "Yes, I would say there was enough produce coming forward now to make the running of the special worthwhile," he said, in reply to a question as to 'whether the quantities warranted the additional facilities. "The special train is very popular with growers, not only of fruit, but also those of vegetables and other produce," he explained, "so I am not surprised at the suggestion that the train should be put on earlier this year." One grower who consigns large quantities of produce to Wellington informed a reporter this morning that he was in hopes that the special train would be running early next week so as to enable growers to have their produce on the Wellington markets in the best possible condition. "I'd like it to start on Sunday." he added hopefully.
