STATE THEATRE

"TOAST OF NEW YORK" AND "MIDNIGHT TAXI." Josie Mansfield, a fascinhting beauty of the post-Civil War period, is torn between her loyalty to Jim Fisk, picturesque r liroad baron, who promotes her first big stage opportunity, and her love for Fisk's best f riend and business partner. Josie Mansfield is played by Franees Farmer in the new screen drama, "The Toast of New York," and is co-starred with Edward Arnold, Cary Grant and Jack Oakie. The film screens at the State to-night. A glittering chapter of American nistory is unfolded in this photoplay. Arnold portrayr Jim Fisk, one of the most colourful figures in the gaudy age when the American dollar found itself and burst its swaddling clothes. Featuring Brian Donlevy and Franees Drake, "Midnight Taxi", also screening at the State to-night, is a thrilling screen adaptation of the Argosy Magazine story by Borden Chase. Dealing with the clever methods used by Federal seeret-service men on the trail of a baffling ring of counterfeitres, the film is a most timely one when it is realised that about 3500 arrests are made each year on countcrfeiting charges and that the amount of "queer money" estimuted to be in daily circulation reaelxes intc millions of dollars. Alan Dmehart, Sig Rumann and Gilbert Roland are east as members of the ring whieh puzzles police for many months by locating its printing plant aboard a luxurious yacht.
