40-Hour Week Provided

AUCKLAND, This Day. A. 40-hour week for plumbers and gas-fitters, to he worked between. 8 a.in. and 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday, is included in the new Dominion award, Nelson excepted, as announced by the Arbitration Court. The award is for one year, commencing December 20. An exception regarding hours is made for mep. engaged on ship repairs who will be required to work a 44-hour week with work on Saturday mornings. The minimum wage for -plumbers and gas-fitters is to be 2/9 an hour. Workers responsible for outside jobs and who mstruct others are to be paid not less than one shilling dajly additional. Provision is made for overtime, while Sundays and statutory liolidays are to be paid at donble rates. Employers are required to convey suburban workers to and from work at the employers' expense, and a-lso meet travelling expenses and board of men engaged in the country. In a dissenting opinion, Mr. A. L. Monteith, the employees assessor, said he was not in agreement with the hours of work -provided for ship-repair workers. He also thought that lead-burners empioyed hy fertiliser manufacturers should liave wages and conditions provided for them.
