ENGLISH CRICKET NEEDS
Yalue ©I Spin Bowling LOHDON Dec. 12. Sir P. F. Warner, the English cricket selector, in a letter to The Tim.es regarding a controversy over the value of spin bowling, says: — "Actually, our spin bowlers ' have been in our Test teams and have fared very unhappily. J. W. Hearne was a lamentable failure. Freeman once toured Australia, but was not chosen for a Test match, and Robins, Mitchell, and Sims have returned analyses sounding like the batting averages of Bradinan or Hammond. On the other hand, Larwood, Allen^ Farnes, Voce .or Bowes have all obtained very fair results. The Australian batsmen generally play the spin bowling extreraely well. Bradman himself simply murders it. "An ideal England "eleven needs a j>roper variety of bowling, fast and slow, with fast bowlers who can keep length. "But. above all, it needs a mediumpaced right-hander who is a good bowler before he pitches — one who possesses flight and change of pace. Discover another Lelimann, Barnes, .1. T. Hearne/ or Tate, and we may face the Australians coniidently, but a spm bowler without length is more or less a gift to Bradman and his colleagues. " ^ _
