Lucullus Lad Wins at Woodville -1 GAY SON BRILL1ANT

WOODVILLE, Last Night.

Features of the opening day of the Woodville meeting were a smart performance by the Foal Stakes candidate, Gay Son, in the nttrsery eVeiit ati all-the-way W111 by the prombted hack, Lucullus Lad, ill the chief handitap; another win, her tllird in succession, for the good three-year-old Flofence Miils; and a firie piece of ridilig by "W. J. Broughton to land Mata Hari a winner iii the opdn sprint. Itading conditions were ideal, the rain haying eased the surface of the track. The hurdle race, Won by the Hastings- trained Cletrac, was °ue. ^ie most interesting events of its kind seen for some time. Positions clianged quickiy in the last lialf-lhils and. wllen Count Willonyx and Hapa Waiata appeared to have the finish to themselves, Cletrao Came along with a determined run and won narrowly, but decisively, from Count WiUonyx wlio berat Pladie by ' a neck. Then came Rapa Waiata, Charade, Hirangi and Gold Tor. But for a bad junip at the second-to-last fence Bladie niight hate won. Top «Hat threw his rider at this fence also. Hirangi lost a lut of groiind at the first fence. Charade went Weli for a uovice.

Amaroso's First Sucoess. At one Stage he was seven or eight lengths ahead >f the second horse and' still had foUr lengths in hand at the home turn. He shotved no signs of wanting to stop in the tun home, and beat Corroboree by three lengths. Two lengths back Grand Jury just nosed Legatee out of third money. The Buzzer was in line fifth and nest caine Helen Ford, Soho, Entail and Padishah. Corroboree was the only horse to seriousiy go after Lncullus Lad before it was too late. He looked greatly improved, and should pick upa race over tiie holidays. The Buzzer moved up two furlongs from home, but w.as not driven right out at the finish when further pursuit was hopeleas, Legatee and Grand Jury rau good races. Gay Son began hrilliant in the Nursery Handicap and after carrying f . ...

Kathbella along to the home turn won. easily from Amigo, who was slow to, get into his stride; At one etage Amigo was eight lengths from the leader, and although he fihished well. he was giving Gay Son tpo much staxt^ Kathbella shoWed' a torrent of ffieed. and ran well for a first effort. Patient riding with a well-timed dab. at the finish won the October Handicapfor Mata Hari who caught the pace^ maker Oratory" a few strideS from tha post, Joviality tried jbo go all the way with Oratory, and weakened out fourth, Wildfiower, fourth at the home> turn, cutting him out of third' money^, None .of the others 'had any ehancq with the early pace set by Oratory.

Gran« vale, Berfect Lady, Royal Choice and Lady Siegfried did best of the ptheri^ Fjorence Miils Unbeaten, Florence Mille, at a Gloaming prica^ maintained lier unheaten redord when she led all the way and outclassed tha hack sprinters in the Mangarawa Han* dicap. Nerens was second all the Way and beat Le Toquet by half a length, Red Sahd went a good i-ace for fourth and Gasman was right up fifth, Grand City rau a faii; race and should improve. Mae&tro decisively wbn the coiicluding event from Lacquer, Lustral and Naughty Marietta, It was his first race since Trentham and. after lying behind the leaders he buried them for pace over the final half furlong. Lacquer and Lustral liad every chancet Wananga was driven up t.o the lead too early and in the circumstances rau a good race to finish fifth.
