RATES ON CROWN LANDS
Unsatisfactory Position "Many of the Ministerial st&fttuMiits are most difiicult to follow ani require interpreting at times/' said Mr F. B. Logan, chairman of the Hawke's Bay County Council, to-day, when a letter was received from the Minister of Finance, advising that rates would.be paid for properties under the housing scheme while they were tenanted, irrespeetive of whether the rent were paid or not. "I feel very anxious indeed about the position," said Mr Logan when Jie roferred to the rates on Crown lands, many of which remainedt unpaid. "Many of the Crown tenants are deliberately holding back from paying their rates. Where property is under private ownership the rates have to be paid according to the law but where it belongs to the Crown we have to go without. The whole tmng is" unsa'Ts«factory and unf air, " he conclu.ded. ,
