FLOWER DISPLAYS

Town Garden Plots in Hastings S0WINGS 0F P0RTULACCA Massed displays are to be featured by Mr J. G. C. Mackenzie, Borough Superintendent of Eeserves, in the town garden plots in Hastings this season. Already some idea of the beauty and eft'ect that can .be obtained from this form of horticulture has beeu providod by the recent showing of the chrysanthemum marigold, a new type that has now finished blooming in the Railway reserves in Russell street. An even more ambitious project in the way of massed displays is to be provided on the westem side of the railway line in Railway road. The whole of the area that forms a background to the' clock tower has been dug up, and, pending the favourable season for the sdiving of grass seed, the area has been planted in portulacca. A pound of seed was ocattered m this area and there are coun'tless thousands of plants, which will be burstiug into bloom any day now and should provide a remarkably picturesque and beautiful sight. It is iutended to treat the Civic Square ' in siinilar manuer, soe that, throughout the summer and early autumn months, the centre of the town will be a mass of colour, which should be particularly impressive when viewed by passengers through the windows oi; passing trains and carg.
