SPLENDID EXHIBITION OF WORK HELD AT IONA COLLEGE

Following the swimming sports at Iona College, Havelock North, on Saturday afteinoon^ the visitors were received in the school hall by the principal^ Miss McNeill, and here was arranged the annual sale of work. Stal'ls were set round the hall with tempting goods of many varieties, beautiful hand-sewn and knitted articles, leatherAvork, books, sweets, and produce, all of which did brisk business throughout the afternoon. Mr J. B. Campbell called npoii Mrs E. B. Waugh to open the sale of work, and mentioned that it was a pleasure to have her present as she and her husband had long been connected with Iona College. Before declaring the sale oi'en Mrs Waugh congratulated the gn'ls on the splendid array of goods on tiic stalls( and appealed to the visitors to do Lneir part in purchasing thcse tempting gonds The art worlc at Iona is always of a a-ery high standard, and it was with much pleasure that the visitors viewed the displays after having made their purchases at the (sale. The exhibition was divided into tAvo groups. In oue room was to be found the dressmakmg and needleAA'orlc, Avhile in another was the other art work. In the dressmaking section were beautifully-made undies of all descriptions, with fiue hand-sewing, embroidery and also fagotting and smocking, both of which were much admired. Day and evening frocks Avere hung all round the wa'lls and were splend'd examples of dressmaking, while shorts and shirts were also beautifully made. In a smaller room were samples of the work of the junior pupils — wool work, rugs, painting and so on, all well done. It would be difficalt to praise adequately the art exhibition^ but the pupils and their mistress are deserving of the \rery higkest praise for the beautiful work on view. Wonderful copper-work, Avood boxes, firescreens and fenders were very much admired, and also many smaller articles in brass, copper and pervter work, book-ends, boxes, table mats, mirror frames_, gate platcs^ lovely brass tables and quite a number of peAvter boxes and bowls, mirrors and pictureis beautifully enamel-painted. In the leather-work section were book covers, blotters, purses, and many samples of embossed leather work, includiug bags, boxes and a particularly attractive stool. Tapestry stools and pictures were also to be seen, and several three-fold embroidered screens. Round the walls were numeroas paintings, all beautifully done. and recipe books Avith painted parchment covers were a new and attractive idea. In the embroidery section were some samples of fine richlieu work and also smocking and embroidered pictures, and there were also one or two pieces of carving.
