MATTHEWS'S. FEAT Empire Games Trials at Wellington SHARPLEY WINS HURDLES
(By relevratii)-
WELLINGTON, Last Night. At the national Empiro Games trials | on Saturday 0. H. Matthews, of Oan- ! terbury, the New Zealand Olympic represcutative, ran a inaguiiij»t three miles to break K. Murakoso's New Zealand record of 4miu. 11.6sec. by 4.6 1 jsec. The weather was fine and there 1 jwas a moderate breeze, but the track . jwas soft at'ter a night 's rain. The three miles field was: Matthews (Canterbury), Crompton (Auckland), j Geddes (Otago), Gregory (Wellington), and McCalman Wellington). Matthews i took the iead after the first iap, running at a fast pace. The mile-was covered iu 4min. 34sec. At the two miles, which Matthews ran in 9min. 25sec., he was 200 yards from Mackay, Crompton and Geddes. At two and ahalf miles he lapped McCalman and Gregory. He finished strongiy, three- , quarters of a lap abead of Geddes, with j Cronxpton 12yds. back and Mackay a I similar distanee away fourth. It is doubtful whether the record time will be recognised because of the wind.Miss Betty Forbes (Otago) broke her own reccnt high jump record with a leap of 5ft. Olin. Quinn (Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay) won both sprints eonvincingly. Fitzsimmons " f aded at the finish of a furlong. Miss D. Lumiey (Auckland) finished with a great burst to win the women 's 100yds. and Miss Strachan (Canterbury) also finished strongiy. In the first quarter-milo Broadway made a great pace, but fell away when Tyrie challenged him, and the second race was a triumph for Dr. J. M. Watt (Wellington), who had been in trainr ing for only a short time, after lying last when the sprint commenced. The mile and the half-mile were disappointing races. Allen led at the bell in the half-mile from Bell, Boot and Longley. Allen strode out with a furlong to go, but Boot overhauled him with 50yds. to go and won by two yards. There were only four starters in the mile — Black (Wellington), Boot, Allen and Wade (Auckand). The first lap took 75sec. Boot led in the second lap and Allen in the third. Wade went to the lead at the bell, but Allen used his long stride and ran a splendid lap to finish strongiy, four yards ahead of Boot, who slowed up three yards in front of Wade.
In both his heat and the final oi the 120yds. hurdles, Sharpley knocked the first hurdle, but took the rest faultlessly. Nclligan made the pace f6r Anderson in the 440yds. hurdles, but the lattei could not maintain it. There were no outstanding performances in the field events, Dctailed results: — 100 yards: G.
