YEAR'S FILMS FOR THE STATE THEATRE
"An outstanding year of film attractions for New Zealand audiences is assured," said Mr J. P. Moodabe, managing director of Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd., in commenting on the new line-up cf pictures to be presented in 1938 a.t cincma houses under control of his organisation. Amalgamated Thcatres, said Mi Moodabe, had bought for screening througnout- its entire New Zealand circuit, comprising nearly 70 theatres, the forthcoming product of four studios — United Artists, 20th Century-Fox, Gau-:nont-British and Dominions and R.K.O. Radio. These four offered some of the ; outstanding productions on whit-h the industry would rely for 1938, among them being: — Twentieth Century-Fox. — Eddie Cantor's "Aji Baba Goes ti Town"; Sonja Henie's "Thin Ice" (wilh Tyrone Pow- j er) and "Happy Ending" t. with Don t Ameche); Shirley Temple's "Heidi" and | "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm"; "Jean," featuring Don Amcihe cpposite Annabelia in her Hollywood debut; "Alexander's Ragtime Band'" "Career in C Major," with Myrna Loy and Warner Baxter; "Lancer Spy" (Dolores Del Rio); "Sally, Irene and "Mary." G.B.D. — Gracie Fields and Yictor AfcLaglen in "He Was Her Man"; AnnaLella in "Dinner at the Ritz"; Jack Buchaoan and Maurice Ohevalier in "Break the News"; Jack Buchanan in "The Skv's the Liinit"; Jessie Matthews in "Sparkles"; Jessie Matthews in "Sailing Along"; George Arliss in "Doctor Svn"; John Gielgud in "Richard of Bordeaux" (in technicolour). R.K.O.-Radio. — f 'Yictor ia the Great," Herbert Wilcox's lavish production filmed at Denham studios at a c-ast of £140,000 and starring Anna Neagle with Arton Walbrook; Jrene Dunne and Jolm Barrymore in "Joy of Living"; Ginger Rogers in "Irene"; Ginger Rogers and Katherine Hepburn in "Stage Door"; Lily Pons in "Born to Sing"; three Bobby Breen productions: iNino Martipi in "Music for Madam"; Mariam Ilcipkins in "The Happy Fellow"; Fred Astairs and Ginger Rogers in a Pandro S. Berman production, with music by Irving Berlin; Barbara Stanwyck and Herbert Marshall in "Breakfast for Two"; Ginger Rogers and Charles Boyer in "Perfect Harmony."
In addition. R.K.O.-Radio is handling Joe E. Brown, Richard Dix and Wheefer and Woolsey productions, and George O'Brien "Westerns." 'R.K.O.-Radio has secured Walt Disney's "Mickey Mouse" snd "Silly Symphonies" cartoons, and will fe.ature in technicolour a fulllength Walt Disney cartoon entitled "Snowwhite and tfie Seven Dwarfs." "Marcli of Time" series also come under :he banier of R.K.O.-Radio. United Artists. — Headed by "The Hurrican e," with an all-star cast, United Artists' product includes all films made by Samuel Goldwyn, Alexander Ivorla and Walter Wanger; Gary Oooper in "The Adventures of Marco Polo"; Fredrie March in "Nothing Sacrecl" (in technicolour); Madeleine Carroll in "Arabian Nights" (in technicolour), "I Love as I Please," and in "A Kiss in Paris";. Sabu (of "Elephant Boy " fame) in "Mutiny in the Mauntains" (technicolour); Merle Oberon in "Diyorce of Lady "; Robert Donat in "Four Feathers"; "A Man with Ten Models" and "52nd Street," both fashion films by Walter Wanger, famous for his "Vogues of 1938"; several other technicolo.ur films, namely, "Gaiety Girls," "Over the Moon" and "Spring in My Heart." In addition, United Artists aro handling "Skippy" cartoons, in technicolour.
