STAR'S INJURY DELAYS OPERA
Injury to a star delayed the start of the opera "Ariadne et Barbe Bleu" at Covent Garden by nearly an hour. And Sir Thomas Beecham, director of punctuality, went on the stage to apologise and explain. For nearly two hours before she was due to appear Mme. Germaine Lubin, star of the Paris Opera, who had had au aceident, struggled to stop her nose bleeding. No word of her predicament reached her French and English dressers in her dressing-room at the theatre. In her room at her hotel Mme. Lubin lay on her back trying to stem the blood. Three times she thought she had succeeded, xose to leave for the opera, but the moment she stood up the trouble begau again. The opera was timed to start before she was able to telephone. "I am leaving in a taxi at once, ' ' she said. Shortly afterwards she stepped out of the taxi at the stage door, still holding a dainty handkerchief to her nose. Sir Thomas Beecham had informed the audience that Mme. Lubin had met prith'an accident, but that she meant to ' appear. He paid tribute to her willpower and courage.
