EARLY H.B. PEACHES
First Consignment of Season Sent from District Hawke's Bay's first peaches of the season wer© railed from Hastings last evening for distribution on various markets, particularly at Wellington. Th© various consignments from the several growers were somewhat larger than is usual, and were at least a week to 10 days earlier. The consignments comprises Mayflowers and Sneeds, and growers are liopeful that the prices obtained will be rather liigher than usual, for the fruit was in particularly fine condition for this time of the year. Indeed, more than one grower stated this morning that he had never had such a fine first-picking. The fact that there was no erop last seasonj and that, tliough affected by early frosts this year, the trees were bearing excellent fruit, was mentioned by one grower, who said that, although the crop was not as heavy as it might have been, th© quality and flavour was first rate. "I have never had better quality," he said, "nor has such a, crop been so early as this year." His remarks concerned Sneeds, which comprised th© greater part of last night' s consignment. A grower of Mayflowers was also enthusiastic and said that there was a deeided blusli on the fruit dispatched yesterday. This colouring was more marked than on any previous consignment he had forwarded in past years. The fruit was sold in the open mayket at Wellington this morning. As far as the Hawke's Bay market is concerned, several retailers are expecting to receive their first supplies of the season this afternoon pr to-morrow morning.
