GARDEN COMPETITION
Judges Have First Inspection The first stage of the judging of the gardens entered in the best-kept residential garden competition, arranged by the Hastings and District Progress League, was completed yesterday when .the adjudicators inspeeted the various entries. The task took over five hours. Owing to the several postponements '*bf the visit of the judges, on account of unfavourable weather, the gardens had passed their best stage for this time .of the year, but the judges were pleased to note that the standard was quite high. One feature that greatly impressed them was the manner inwhich the householders had utilised eVery inch of space, and they also were pleased with the extraordinary neatness of the gardens generally. The efforts of the majority of the householders to grow shrubs on their small plots were favourably commented upon by the judges. The second visit will not take place until next April and until this eventuates no results will be announced, for the deeision rests upon the points gained on each of the inspections.
