CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A magisterial inquiry into the stranding of the trawler Muriel on the North Splt" o'f the Sumner bar two months ago was opened here to-day. ^ Mr. .Young, S.M.; prfcsiding. The assessors wero Captain F. J.. Crawford and captain A. p.'Pryde. When the c&se opened, the Magistrate asked if there was any question of over-iiisurance. Mr. Brown, who appeared for the Marine Department, answered : "I don't think' so." William Stephen, rnaster of the Muriel, emphasised that he did not hear a fog signal before or after the stranding. The fog was very thick at the time and visibility was about two lengths of the ship. The sea was cairn, He did not heave the lea-d and was con-* fident of picking up Godley Head as a clieck of the course had proved satisfactory. The trawler stranded about 7.2Q .p.m. There was no broken water to give warning, and, just as the boat struck, he saw a light ahead through the .fog.
