Seaman Fined £125

VV'EILLJUN GTUN, This Day. John Hastings, aged 53, ship's fireman, was fined £125 on a charge of importing into New Zealand a quantity of prepared opium. 'lt was stated that he was a seaman on tlie GabrielJa which arrived at Auckland on Novemher 24 from Australia. He was arrested at Wellington the following evening and found to be in possession of 20 tins of opium in a bag and one in his pocket. Accused denied that the police found a tin in hjs pocket, ahd maintainedi he cfid not know what was in the bag. He was to receive £10 if he delivered it at 9. '30 to a man at the corner of two streets that evening.
