Central Power Board Asked To Contribute £90
(From
WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. j Would the benefits which the Central Hawke's Bay Electrie Power Boaird would gain from an eleetrical exhibition which it is proposed to hold at the centennial celebrations in Wellington in 1940 justify its paying £90 toward the cost of the exhibition? This was the question to which members of the board had to find an. answer when, at the monthly meeting to-day, a request for a contribution of £90, in three instalments of £30 each, for an "eleetrical court" in Wellington in 1940 was received. The board decided to contribute an amount to be decided later. Mr P. J. Witherow agreed that it ( was an object worthy of some support but not to the extent of £ 90. The chairman, Mr A. C. Russell, was j also not in favour of committing the I board to that amount. An exhibition of eleetrical appliances might, he said, be of* some value, but the board's consumers could get all they wanted from the secretary and the firms. There was too much asking for money; every "tin pot" oecasion meant a rush to locai bodies for a donation. Mr R. A. Praser did not think thc court would be of any benefit to rate payexs. Mr A. C. Holms thought that the board should support the scheme within reasonable limits, but as it was to be in Wellington, mere might be the question whether Wellington citizens would be contributing as much as they should. Mr W. A. Chambers said the exhibition was for the whole of New Zealand. It would attract visitors from abroad, and bring money into the Country. A sum of £3000 (which would be approximately the amount available if other boards did the same as the Central Hawke's Bay one was proposing to do) would not niean a big exhibition for six months. Mr A. W. S. Longley spoke of the advantages of displaying the latest advaneements in eleetrical appliances to thousands of people, and Mr C. Pattison mentioned the large number of women — prospective buyers of appliances — likely to attend. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Chambers, seconded by Mr Longley, to advise that the board will support the court and will decided on its contribution later.
