PERVERTED APPETITES

Indigestion in Cows Occasionally when a cow is in calf she exibits an extraordinary appetite for all kinds of strang>e mateirials, from linen on the ling to pieces of tin and metal that have been coated with syeet things like treacle or even paint- The swallowing of a foreign is seldom detected, and the early symptoms o^f troubles cansed by it are indigestion, and often the case is treated as such. The cow shows evidence of pain on pressure, and has an anxious look owing to the acute ihflammation around. the wound which is sometimes caused in the stomach when something siharp is swallowed. If the perforation is slow acute symptoms may be absent and the trouble developes into a form of chronic indigestion, which may pass off as the sharp hody passes through the diaphragm, where it causes distress in breathing, and so reaches the cheet. The furthor progress of such a foreign substanco is doubtful. It may pen- ■ etrate the lungs or heart, or it may miss the vitals organs and reach the skin, where it may be found in abeess form and removed.
