TOWEL FOR EACH COW
» 1 Model Dairy in America "MATERNITY" WARD ATTACHED A "maternity hospital" for Coivs, special plant which took the millc from the cows into bottles and a separate sterilised towel for each coW Were among the features of a model dairy described by Miss E. Fitzgibbofi, Plunlcet nursing adviser, in a talk to the Patea branch of the Plunket Society. As the Patea branch had done so much to encourage the people .to use clean milk, she was sure they would be interested to h°ar of a model dairy i she had visited in New Jersey, said Miss Fitzgibb0n. The cows wero kept in open shelters, fed measured quantities of food, and not allowed in a paSture at all. Every possible precaution ivas taken to ensure that the milk was free from harmful bacteria and it ivas drawn off the Coiv by a revolving milking macliine called a "rotolacter," in a "lactoriuni.,> It was at no stage exposed to the air. 'The cow approached the "lactorium-" along a white tiled runway, where it ivas hosed, flrst with cold, and then with hot water, and dried with a sterilised towel by i workman in a white sterilised uniform. A separate towel was used for each cow. Before being milked a quantity f milk was drawu off from the cow and tested, to ensure that it was pure. The cow was placed on the revolving machine and milked by it, the process taldng 12£ minutes. Each cow's milk was weighed and recorded and all the worlc.ers as well as the cows were carefully examinated at regullar intcxvalp to make sure they rvere in proper health. Pasteurisation of Ihe niilk at that dairy was not necessary. There was even a "mateniity hospital" attached to it, where the cow's calves wero born under hygienic and nioder-i conditioiis. Naturally the milk from this dairy was very expensive, said Miss Fitzgibbon. ^
