(KeCeived y, ».ao a.m.j SHANGHAI Dec. 8. It is believed that General Chiang Kai-shek, following his departure from Nanking, may possihly xetire from the Premiership. His xnost likely successors are thought to be Dr, Wang Chiang-wei, former Premier, who favours xeaching a compromise with Japau, and General Ying-chiang, Minister of War. According to a message from Tokio, Mr. Hawai, the Eoreign Office spokesman, stated to-day; — "We are waitiug to see what the Chinese do before formulating peace plans. "The Chinese have displayed no signs of changing their anti- J apanese attitude. They must adopt a policy of complete co-operation with Japan before anything can be done. "We suppose that Britain or other Powers with interests in China may be making efforts to persuade the Chinese to approach ns, and we regard such efforts as friendly. We deny^ however, speciflc knowledge that peace efforts have hitherto been made by the Germans. ' '
