MANAWATU VISIT

Little Change in Shield Competition BRITISHERS C0MING
(By
The third round of the District Shield competition did not see any change in the leading positions, except that Waipukurau, Kia Toa and Havelock North have come closer together, and there are only a few points separating these three clubs. Great interest will he centred in the last round, to be played on Decemhex 18. Kia Toa play two games against Waipukurau, and Havelock North one. Next Saturday, December 11, members of the Manawatu Centre, totalling 16 rinks will pay a visit to this centre. As there appears to be some inisunderstanding over the matter I again give the arrangements for the visit. In the morning the visitors will play on the Napier and Wairere greens against four rinks from Napier, four from Wairere, three from Bluff Hill, two" from the Port, two from Omarunui, and one sentre rink.'In.the afternoon the visitors will play an inter-centre match on the Hastings 'and Kia Toa greens against rinks made up as follows:— . Three rinks from the Hastings Club, two from Kia Toa, and one rink from each of the other clubs i'n the centre and one centre rink. Given a fine day a very enjoyable outing should result both for the visitors and the membera of the local clubs. Those members of the Hastings and Kia Toa Clubs who will not be able to get a. game ou their own greents on Saturday have been iiivited to visit the National Service and Havelock North greens. Kia Toa Tourney. The Kia Toa Club proposes to hold a pairs tourney on December 28 and 29, for which good prizes will bo givea the winners and runners-up. New Year Tourney. The New Year tourney of thj Hawke's Bay Centre will be played on greens in the Hastings area on January 1 and 3, for which entries close with the secretary, Mr P. J. Bear, 1 "May Avenue, Napier, on December 18. British Tourists. The British tourists, who are now in the South Island are scheduled to arrive in Hastings by the mail train on the evening of December *22, and play a match the following afternoon on ihe Hastings club's green. They will be mct at the station by the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, and the president of the centre, Mr W. Ross, and taken to the Hastings Club 's green f Or the Teception. All bowlers are asked to bo present in suitable bowling a'ttire and give the visitors a hearty weleome. The teams to meet the Britishers will be plcked from the president* and vicepresidents of the various clubs in the centre. i Family Reunion. An interesting family reunion wtll take place when Mr J. G, • Cuthbert, vice-captain of the Engiish bowling team to play at the Empire Games at Sydney arrives at Invercargill. There he will meet three sisbers whom he has not seen for many years. Mr Cutbberc's sisters, all of whom are living nea-r Invercargill, are Mrs J. King, Mrs W. J. Robertson, wife of the Rev. Yf. J. Robertson, and Miss- Cuthbert. He has nqt seen them for 38, 31 and 15 years respectively." This is his first visit to the Dominion, his home being in Scotlaud. The Good Bcwler. Many factors contribute to indicate the accomplished howler, apart from temperament — this he muBt have — the essential is to be able to gauge quiekly the conditions ruling on the green (states a southern writer). Most players are reasonably good on their home green, but lamentably astray when playing on a different surface. Tho peculiarities of the green receive too much attention, and play suffers in consequence. Playing on strange greens is a necessary part in the education of the young bowler especially, and when there he should be observant of wind and surface texture, and keep his confideuce, for what the home member can do the visitor should be able to perform. Tnferiority complex seems to prevail to too great an extent. Ladies' Bowling. Reports to hand indicate that ladies' bowling in Otago is eminently successful. There are seventeen ladies' bowling teams in Dunedin, boside country teams. New Zealand Away. New Zealand will be represented by 38 players at tlie Australian bowling carnival in Sydney in January. From these will be chosen the players . |p j»jpresent New Zealand in the ftiitfsh Empire Games which follow the" Australian carnival. The Central Otago rink will consist of Dr. E. R-. Austin, and H. Wilkiusou, of Cromwell, W. A. Harlow, of Clyde, and J. D. Best, the well-known Otago Club player (states the Otago Daily Times). Dr. Austin ia a well-known bowler who has taken part in a number of New Zealand tournameuts, and New Yea.r tournamenls in Southland. H. Wilkinson, who will probably skip the rink, has a good record as a singles player. In one season, four or five years ago, Wilkinson won the Central Otago singles. champioaship, the Dunedin Easter singles, and the North Otago singles. Last Chrislmas he again won tbe Central Otago Singles championship. A first-class player who should be suited by the fast conditions in Sydney, Wilkinson should do well in the singles event in Sydney.
Dominion Tournament. With the New Zealand champioushin tournament only six weeks away thd officials of the Dunedin Centre are nat* urally anxious to have the greens in the best condition possible (states au exchange). The prolonged period of dcv weather was presenting a tough problem, but the recent beneficial Tains have worked a transformation, aud tho suxfaees are now, almost without exception, in first-class condition. One of •the most improved surfaees in fchtS centre is the Leith Club's gree'n, which now ranks with the best. The Duned:a club's green, which for some seasons past has been anything but satisfaw tory, is now steadily returning to itf old state of perfection, thanks to rhB diligeut and expert work of the greon-> keeper (Mr Russell, formerly in charge of the Waihopai green in Invercaw giU).
