SUCCESSFUL BALL HELD AT WAIPUKURAU FOR H. B. CHILDREN'S HOMES
A red, wliite and blue decorative colour seheme was carried out with splendid effeet for the annual ball in aid of the Hawke's Bay Children 's Honies, which was held in the Municipal Theatre. Waipukurau, last eveniug. Loug red, wliite aud , blue streamers aud hags etxended froui the ceutre, aud suspended right arouud the walls of the dance hall and crossing to eaeh coruer, were dozens of both large aud small flags, interspersed with rosettes or red, white and blue. A big Uuiou Jack covered the frout of the dress circle, with siualler flags and rosettes nu either side. The frout of the stage and the orchestral dais were fllled ru with brackeu, intermingled with flags and rosettes. Mrs. P. F. Wall and Miss Tiny vVilder were iu eharge of the decorative seheme iu the dance hall, aud they and their ht-Jpe'rs, Mosdauies H. Stoveil, A. Dods, Misses J. Ormond, Mary Wall, M. Robiuson, Frue Wilder, L. Parsous, Joau Harker, and Messrs. H. Robinson aud Haukey, workcd uuceasingly to accouiplish such au eft'ective seheme. The stage was transformed iuto a xovely bower, with tall jardiuieres of rambler roses, shading floiu pale to deepest piuk, miugled with other seasoual flowers aud loug trails of native feru. Easy chairs and small tables were placed here and there, aud placed on a table in the ceutre of the stage
was.a big bowl of mixed flowers. Aloug the front of 'the stage, brightly lit by che footlights, were bunches of brackeu 'and flowers, with an edge of blue and pale piuk flowers. Mrs. . F. A, G. Dunn, with her usual originality, had planned this decorative seheme, being assisted by Mesdames W. B. Fisher and Y. Bradley. The supper was a partieularly delieious one, with home-made savouries and a variety of sandwiches. The attraetive table -fleeorations of crystal boWls of mixed flowers gav'e a bright toueh of' colour. Those in.cliarge of the supper arrangements were: — Mesoames J. A. McLean, A. S. Wilder, I. W. N. Mackie, F. Hewitt, W. J. Gray, A . Timms, C. Giblin, Misses H. Moorhead and M. ■ Buchanan, assisted by many helpers. Les Henry's orchestra played an excellent programme. Dancers from all paTts "of the distriet who were present at the ball agreed that it was an outstanding success, and great credit is due to the joint secretaries, Miss A. Wilder and Mr. S. G. Peterkins, Mrs. P. F. Wall (organiser), asd all tneir assistants. Prior to the ball a buftet dinner was held at the Tavistock Hotel. As everything in conneetion with the ball was donated, the Children 's Homes will greatly benefit. Amdng those present were:— Mrs P. F. Giblin, silver lame sldrt, having a softly-flared bodice of pink and silver brocaded lame. Mrs J. A, McLean, black cloque gown smartly fashioned. with a corsage spray of natural flowers. Mrs fc>. Peterkins, black taffeta, having a big bow at the baek and pretty shoulder spry. Mre B. Jboys, rich blue and silver striped taffeta, the trained skirt cut diagonally, and a posy of red, white and blue flowers at tne waistline. Mrs W. B. Fisher( black georgeite with flat white roses at the neckiine. Mrs J. D. Todd, blue and silver brocaded gown, having pink and blue plaited. shoulder strap and long pink ' and blue taffeta sash. Mrs V. Bradley, black ninon flowered in red and green, having a gathered neckiine. Mra C. Schroder, black sheen, sprigged with field flowers. Mrs • Eric Todd, effective gown in lemon crepe, striped in green and red, with a cluster of black and red. grapes on the shoulder. Mrs H. Htovell, bronze and beige lace gowu^ the neckiine finished with brown rucaings and brown belt. Mrs Guy Monrad, blue floral silk gown. Mrs-Barnaby, black satin frock, with nan'ow frills on the full sldrt.

Miss A. Wilder, primrose chiffon closely pin-tucked, and a spray of cream roses at the neck. Miss Mary Wall, lotus bud ripple satin, with diamante shoulder strap. Miss J. Ormond, deep blue net striped in ehenille, the hemline of the full skirt finished with a band of matching velvet, and twisted shoulder strap of velvet. Miss H. Cuthbert, 'blue and silver striped georgette, with waterfall frills on the skirt. Miss Joan Harker, salmon pink satin, the folded corsage finished with pink roses. Miss R. Monckton, deep cream georgette frock patterned with clusters of pink roses and green Jeaves. . Miss Margaret Bobinson, frock of black chiffon, having narrow frills on the skirt. Miss ' Margaret Pinkney (Dannevirke), flame georgette frock, having a high neckiine and short puffed sleeves. Miss Prue Wilder, green chiffon frock, having a very full skirt, and cream roses on the neckiine. Miss E. Kyle, rose . pink silk lace frock. Miss Christine Williams (Hastings), frock in black georgette, having a high gathered front neckiine and cut square at the baek. Miss June Hewitt, black net mounted on black satin, with a big scarlet rose on the neckiine. Miss Jean Hunter, black satin frock, with brilliant shoulder strap. Miss Margaret, Glenny, black taffeta, having a high gathered neckiine. Miss Susie White, cream chiffon flowered in bronze and pink.
