MR. H.- J. THOMPSON
A large gathering of railwaymen was held in the ra/ vay social hall at Napier to farewell Mr H. J. Thompson, assistant locomotive foreman at Napier, who is retiring after completnig forty years service in the employ of the department. Representatives of the service were present j. •— i cll parts of the district, and during the evening a number -of speakers refer-red in enlogistic-terms to Mr Thompson. * Apologies for abseiice were received from the Hofi-W. E. Barnard, M.P., Mr E. L. Cullen, M.P., Mr G. H. Mackley, gehOral manager of raihvays, and a number of others. • A varied toast list gave rnany speakers the opportunity of . expressing their regard for ;tlie -gucst of the evening, who intends to reside in Napier af ti r. his retirement. During the proceedings; Mr F. Whelan, locomotive foreman at 'Palmerston North, on behalf of the railway staff and Palmerston North loco staff, presented Mr Thompson with a handsome eiHit-day chiming clock. Mr Thompson suitably replied.
