Hawke V Bay Candidates in Training TRY-0UTS AT HASTINGS Another' suecessfal series of try-outs for the Hawke's Bay athletes to taka part in the trials at Wellington on Saturday to decide the New Zealand selection for the Empire Games in Australia, was held at Nelson Park last evening, undcr the auspiees of the Hastings /. mateur Athletic and Cycling Club. • Four candidates, Fitzsimmons, Sharpley, Begley and Miss Rona Tong, made special runs over their partic-dar distances and their form was excellent. Fitzsimmons covered the 100 yards in lOsecs. dead and later in the evening recor»'.ed 22 l-3sees. for the furlong. Both" these times, if not even improved upon at Wellington on Saturday, should about ensure ultimate selection. Sharpley s'caled the 120 yards hurdles in tho good time of 15 4-5secs., but should be able to improve on this. The other hurdler, Miss Tong, has only to repeat her time of 12 4-5secs. for the 80 yards to seture New Zealand representation. Begley cmtinues to show improvement and his performance of 58secs. for tHe quarter mile flat should be improved upon nqxt Saturday. The Hawke's Bay • team, - which includes Quinn, of Gisborne,' with the quartette mentioned, is due to leave Hastings to-morrow for Wellington, while a number of other umpetitors from Napier and Hastings c.ubs will 'be making tue j to the city- to. take part in the handicap events that are on the same programme as the national trials.
