AUCKLAND, Last Night. The attitude of the Health Department towards the - pr'oposed staff ohanges recently considtered by the Auckland Hospitai Board was explained in a report presented to a commlttee meeting of the Board to-night. The leport stated-that the outstanding conclusion reached was that the proposal to attach to the staff two senior medical men, one medical and one surgical, for the.puiqrse of clinical work hnd . medical and surgical supervision was a ' mo've in . the right direction. TKe department gave that part of proposals ' its entire approval. It suggested that these two officers should be known as the chief of medical service and the chief of the surgical service. ' It was suggested that • the medical and surgical officers, remembering that they were to undertake clinical work as. well as supervision; would have their time fully occupied. ' Therefore, it was obvious that they could not be expected to take part in the administrative work. There would still be supervision of the various cepartments of the hospitai, such as X-ray, massage and out-patients, together with the institution's infirmary, convalescent and Warkworth Hospitai. The department suggested that in order to inake the control complete there should te a third medical man who might still Le known as the superintendent, anu. who would * discharge withiu the hospitai purely administrative fuuctions ahd exercise supervision over the whole of the scientific and medical services of the board. There would be four controlling officials. There would.be. a -medical man, known as superintendcnt, discharging the funetions already . m'entioned. An- . other would be. the senior , medical man, undertaking clinical iv;ork, who wquld be.responsible to the board for .Ihe entiro medical work of the , institution. The two other; officers-wquld.be.- senior surgeon and" secretary.'. The surgeon would oceupy, on the" surgical side of the hospitai, a pq'sition arialdgous to that of a medical bffieer. TEe secretary would' bc chief execii'tive officer, exercising uuthority under the 'board. He woiild be empowered ;to a'ct 'on tho board's behalf in. all mat'ters: outside those sp'ecifically stated-'as'ap'pertaining to the three previously • nientioned officials. • . ' • • -• •- - •- The board at ; its 'next.; meeting will move^ to take - tlie-.neeessary -stops for authorising the. calling.of ' applications for positions. - ' . . ..
