Narrow Escape from Destruction

ClTroin

NORSEWOOD, Last Night. This eyening_ at ..about '7.30; o 'clock considerable excitement and alarm was caused . by - the , discovery of a fire iij the Norsewood School. The flrst" '• to discover the " o'utbreak were Joy, and. Fay Strett'on,.*daughters of the principal of the richool, who were playing on . the . scliool tenuls court. On hearihg a dull *explosion in the schopl, they inveatigated and found flames issuing from a ' cupboard; in tho secondary department 's room. Quickl/ giving the alarm help was fo'rtunately immediately at hand. The fire had a strong hold in the cupboard which' contained a number cf. valuable books, and also in- the partttion walf separating • the High Schoolroom from that of Stds. 3 and 4. With the two rooms full of " smoke, the outlook -was serious, and it was only af ter some quick and stre'nuous work on tho part of the bucket brigade, and* the wresting of a number of boafde .from the partition, so that a plentiful supplv of water could be "poured down, ' thaji! the daiiger was overcomc. • Several large. holes were burnt in ihe floors, and the fire had travelled np the wall a distance of about 18 feet. Had the outbreak not been discovered fdr even another few minutes, nothing short of a fire brigade could have saved the school from being completely destroyed. The cause of the fire is a completo mystery, and • no explanatidn can be given, as even the school heaters-havo not been in use for some time. This is the second occasion withiit 18 months that the school has had a narrow escape from being destroyed by fire. On the previous occasion tho school. hedge caught alight and it was only by a large ,band of willing helpers that the building was saved. •Fortnnately then, and also last evening, there was an absence of wind, otherwise Hothing could have saved the strpcture, iTlarge .wooden one, from destruction.
