EAST COAST LINE

May Carry Passengers in April Since the goods service between Napier and Wairoa was instituted by the Eailways Department in conjunction with the Public Works Department, the tonnage carried both ways has exceeded the most optimistic expeetations. Practically every type of goods traffic, for whieh the line was installed has received the utmost support from the people of the area it serves. This was the satisfactory state >ot affairs disclosed by the General manager of the Eailways Department, Mr G. H. Mackley, who returned to Napier late on iSunday night after a tour ot inspection of the line to Wairoa, ovor whieh he was accompanied by Mr G. J. Burtinshaw, chief engineer to the railways Department, Mr P. E. Angus, railway superintendent, Mr G. T. Wilson, superintendent of transportation, Mr W. Scherning, district traffic maaager, and Mr H. P. Smith, district engineer. The party left Napier for Wellington yesterday morning. It was not likely, Mr Mackley said. that the Public Works Department would hand over the line for the purposes of passenger traffic until April of next year at the earliest, and it would not be possible to inaugurate a service for the benefit of the public be- . fore that time.
