Mayor's Assurance to Retailers

C0-0PERATI0N ASKEO

An assurance that the Borough Council and its inspeetors are adopting reasonable and kelpful measures in the enforcement of the borough by-laws, particuiarly relating to traffio regula- ' tions, is given by tbe Mayor, Mr. G. A, Maddison, in his reply to represent'a tions made last week by the Hastings Retailers' Association. concerning the traffic by-laws. "I desire to advise you that all officers administering not only the by-laws ' of this borougli, but also the laws of the country, relating to municipal administration, are repeatedly apprised and frequently reminded that they should carry out their duties in a spirit of co-operation and helpfulness, and not to unduly embarrass our people," states the reply forwarded to the association. "Nevertheless it is felt by the council that, particuiarly so far as traffic regulations are concerned, it is essential that we should have also the co-operation of motorists. Traffic control in Hastings is becoming increasingly difficult, for the reason that Hastings is practically a 'onestreet' town, and the percentage of motorists per thousand, I l^elieve is M great here as in any other part of New Zealand. % ' "I can assure you that councillors are desirous of encouraging to the utmost tho business interests of Hastings, and for your information I enclose a circular which I personally diotatedi and which is signed by the town clerk, and has been distributed within recent days "to motorists using our etreets. "You state that your executive has received some complaints regarding the observance of by-laws in Hastings, and I can assure you that my council will be glad to receive, at any time, particulars of those complaints, so that the matters can be fully investigated."
