Mr. E, Parlane has been appointed cliairman of the Christchurch Tramway Board for the next 12 months. Mr. J. Matbison was elected deputy-chair-man in place of Mr. Parlane. Mr. T. O. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Einpioyers' Association and the New Zealand Shipowners' Federation, who has been visiting Panama on a health trip, returned to Wellington yesterday by the Awatea. The Rev. Fathirs D. J. liayes and T. J. Ryder, who were recently ordained at the Maynootk Seminary, Ireland, arrived at Auckland on Saturday by the Rotorua from London for service in the Auckland diocese. Sir Harold MacMichael is to be High Commissioner and commander-in-chief for Palestine and High Commissioner for Transjordan, in succession to Sir Arthur Wauchop, who will relinquish his appointment at the end of February. Captain A. T. Adam has been appointed to command the new motor ship Wanaka, of 2370 tons, bujlt for the Union Steamship Co., Ltd., which is to leave the United Kingdom for New Zealand about the end of February. Commandant N. O. Newton and Ensign M. Newton, Auckland, who have been engaged in Salvation Army work in China and Japan for the past year, returned to New Zealand yesterday by the Awatea. Mrf Duncan Darroch, the well-known New Zealand artist, has returned to the Hermitage, Mount Cook, having spent six months in the highlands of Scotland-, the birthplace of his parents. He visited the Island of Jura, the home of the Darrochs. While there he painted the well-known range, the Paps oi Jura. Major J. R. Kirk, M.B.E., Lowei Hutt, wlio durifig the past five montlis has been visiting the four provinces of the Union of South Africa and Portuguese East Africa, returned to Wellington by the Awatea yesterday. Among New Zealanders whom he inet were Dr. R. Campbell Begg, now a prominent specialist in Johannesburg, and Major J. B. Tucker, resident of Kimberley. Mr. J. A. Roberts, of Mnrray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., Dunedin, will arrive at Wellington by the Awatea from Sydney on December 13, with Mrs. Roberts. They are returning from England after attending the wedding of their daughter, Miss Dorothy Roberts, to Mr. Ian McMillan, son of Mr. John McMillan, chairman of directors of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co., Ltd., which was recently celebrated in London. Mr. H. R. Hull, secretary of the London branch of the South British Insurance Company, Limited, in company with Mrs. Hull, arrived at Auckland on Saturday by the Rotorua from London. Mr. Hull was educated at St. John's College, Auckland. He joined the company in 1908 and from the Auckland offiee was transferred to India in 1923. Three years later lie was brought back to New Zealand and shortly afterward was promoted to the secretary ship he now holda. He is to retum to London in February.
