Tukituki Bank Protected. Measures for proteeting the right bank of the Tukituki river witiiin the Waipukurau borough are contained iu the New Zealand Gazette. The area so protected is a distance of approximately 54 chains, extending downstream from the railway traffic bridge. Elooding of Hotel, The task of restoring the damage which was done at the Tavistock Hotel. Waipukurau, last week by water is proceeding rapidly. This is believed to nave been the first case of its kind in Waipukurau, although fiooding resulting from taps being left running is noi, uncommon elsewhere. On several occasions, and once, at least, in Auckland, large warehouses have been damaged in this way. N.Z.E.I. Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Central Hawke's Bay branch of the x\ew Zealand Educationa'i Institute was held on Saturday. In a most interesting and instructive address on the work in science, agriculture and forestry in Porms I. and II., Mr E. C. Hurdslield completed his series of lectures. kji? Adlam moved a vote of thanks and Mr Taylor moved a moti,on that the H.B. Education Board be thanked for the splendid services of the agrieultural instructor in giving these aTdresses. Both motions wefe carried by acclamation. It was deeided to hold a meeting on the first Saturday in Eebruary, 1938, to eonsider the combined Central Hawke's Bay schools sports meeting. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr W. H. Martin was passed, members standing in silence. Melanesian Mission. On Tuesday evening, at 8 o'clock, in the Parish Hall, Ormondville, there wiU be a motion picture film of Melanesia, depicting interesting native scenes from the Solomons, Santa Cruz. and New Hebrides Islands, illustrating the work of the Melanesian Mission. One of the organisers of the mission, Mr John Wilson, son of 1 a former Bishop of Melanesia, will give the necessary explanation. Christmas Cake. The competiti,on for c Li..iai.mas cake held in connection with the Plunket fund, was finalised at the Norsewood Women 's Institute 's Paddy's market, being won by Mrs E. Rasmussen. Fire Brigade Dance. A successful dance, organised by the members of the Waipawa Fire Brigade in aid of the brigade funds, was held in the Municipal Concert Hall. there being an exceptionally good attendance. Excellent music for the dancing was provided by Mrs Meta (piano) and Miss Hodge (banjo), and the duties of M.C. were efficiently carried out by Fireman Stephenson. An excellent supper was served by the members of the brigade.
