Games Executive Council on October 28 appointed four officials to travel with the South' African team which -will compete at the 1938 Empire Games in Sydney. They are: — Manager: Mr. Ira G .Emery, Johahnesburg. Bojjing Trainer: Mr. Latham, junr., Durban. Athletic Trainer: Head-Constable C. J. Roptman, South African Police Training Depot, Pretoria. Swimming Coach: Mr. A. R. Bulley, Durban. It was intended to appoint five officials, including a chaperone, but the number was reduced to four on the council's acceptanee o£ the. Rhodesian Association's offer to lend the services of the chaperone travelling with the Rhodesian team. Thirty travelling reservations were made by the council several weeks before, so that with only four officials to provide for, the council will be able to send a team of 26, which will be inereased to 27 by the presence in Sydney of Barbara Burke, the national record holder, who will travel direct from England. This provision will enable the national selectors to choose a team representative of all sports, which should give a very good account of itself at Sydney. ' The - general manager, Mr. Ira G. Emery, has been connected with athletics for a quarter of a century. He was one of the earliest members of the Johannesburg Harriers, for which club he ran during the year 1910 to 1930. For twenty-one years he has been secretary to the Olympic Games Association; he was chairmcn of the Transvaal Olympic Association and a member of the S.A.A.A. and C.A. In 1921 he managed the South African team which toured Australia and New Zealand, and he competed in New Zealand with the team. The boxing trainer, Mr. W. Latham, . of the Natal Amateur Boxing Association, has had' a long association with amateur boxing in the province. He was the light-heavyweight champion in 1929 ahd 1933 and represented Natal on numerous occasions in addition to appearing in many exhibitions to assist in fostering the Sport. Mr. A. R. Bulley, the- swimming coach, has had active association with swimming in South Africa for about 20 years. He represented and captained Natal on several occasions; and played water polo from 1922 to 1930. He has managed the Natal Currie Cup team from 1931 and was selector of the swimming team for the 1934 British Empire Games and again this year. He is also keenly interested in hockey • and has often represented Natal, and has been captain and manager. . He was present at the British Empire Games in 1934 and officiated as a timekeeper for the swimming sectiou. He studied the methods adopted at the Games and has imparted his knowledge to swimmers who were fortunate enough to be coached by him.
