AID FOR WORKLESS
"Christmas Box" Plan of Employment A campaign to enlist the supporfc of private employers and employing authorities to give work before Christmas to a number of 3 .on ou the State placement roll is being inaugurated in Hastings. The hope is expressed that there will be a generous response to the appeal, which is in the nature o£ a request for a "Christmas Box" for uuemployed men and their families. There is no suggestion of a subridy, but it is proposed to approaeh employers' aud the employing authorities, and to appeal to the general publie, to soe if they can, out of sympathy and tolerance, provide say one or two days' work between now and Christmas for men who are seeking employment. It is pointed out that on the State Placement roll there are in,any men, who, because of putely personal reasons, have no desire to register themselves as unemployed, but nevertheless are earnestly seeking employment, and naturally availed themselves of the placement roll with that end in view. The number of such men is considerably greater than is generally' realised and appreciated. It is emphasised that the object of the campaign is to assist those men who receive no other form of relief. Every effort is to be made to induce citizens to give such men at least one day's work before Christmas. Such offers of assistance should be made to Mr H. S. Robinson, Placement Officer, at th$ officSf in M ark oi s.trecL
