OPERETTA "THE CAPTIVE" PRESENTED BY GUILD MUSIC CIRCLE MEMBERS

A most appreciative audience iilled the Hastings Oddfellows' Hall, last evening for the presentation of the operetta, "The Captive," which wai giv6n by members of the music circle of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild. Tho story of the operetta centred round gypsy life, and the charming coloured frocks worn by those taking tho leading parts, and also those of the members of the chorus, gave a pleosingly gay appearance to the scene, which was set in a seaside cave. The music, which was composed by Edgar Moy, and the lyrlcs, composed by Patience Moss, had a very catching rhythm, which was shown to the greacest possible advantage by those taking part. The cast was as follows: — Old Molt, Mrs G. Marsicano; sapphira, Mrs B. Jenkinson; Liz, Mrs F. Kixkman; Lnzy, Mrs G. G. Hill; Cripple Diek, Miss M. Bowersby; Lady Mary Pentreath, Miss E. Compton; Eoger Tregarthon, Mrs E. Whetstone; Joe, Mrs S. M. Franklinj Eogue, a dancer, Miss Vida Hayes; Smugglers, Mesdames M. E. Younge, J. Anderson, J. C. Kelly and J. Warrington; gypsy chorus, Mesdames M. B. Buck, F. E. Rutledge, J. T. Macaulay, B. Baddley, W. A. Burton, Misses 8. North, Q. Nelson and Eileen Taylor. Each soloist sang delightfully, aiid in the eonclttding scenes weie vocal duets by Mrs E. Whetstone and Miss E. Compton, which received very hearty applause. The chorus work throughout was good, and each momber sang with obvious pleasure. The solo dance by Miss Vida Hayes was a talented performance. The whole performance was capably organised. Thoee taking part were trained by Miss B. McHutchon, and to her rrjist be given a very large share of the praise which this very successful performance received. The stage managing was capably carried out by Mrs V. I* .Wfiflterman, with the result that the operetta continued from first noto to last without a hitch Or a moment 's delay. Another worker who spottt much time and i rouble to make the operetta a success was Mrs J. T. Macaulay, a quiet but most efficient guild member, Special thanks were given to the musicians, besides accompanying, plaved delightful music before the performance commenced, and also at the infcerval. The orchestra consisted of Miss B. McHutchon (piano), Mrs Kershaw (violin) and Miss Shattky ('cello). At the conclusion of the performance those taking part e'njoyed a delicious supper, and an opportunity was taken for Mrs Macaulay, on behalf of the members of the cast, to m*ike a presen. tation to Miss McHutchon in appreciation of her splendid work.
