Changes In Coiffure Silhouette

Rolls And Puffs Galore

IJTHE New Year will see the coiffure ■ilhouette changing. The new mode calls for more waves, more detail in curls, and a profusion of rolls and puffs (achieved by adding extra hair pieces) to complement the new clothes inspired by the 1900 mode. Modification of the famous Pompadour silhouette will be seen in many of the lavely coiffures designed by the world's leading hair stylists. Hatlines are continuing to fly away from the face, showing the need of a softening arrangement of curls at the front and sides. There' will be renewed Interest in elaborate hair ornaments. Circular veils, topped by one large gold flower, will be popular. In fact, gold is to make a spectacular reappearance in the world of fashion generally. A golden sequinned flower, placed low on the hairline against a Pompadour roll, will be effective, if worn with a matching sequinned bolero. Ermine tails' strike a luxurious note when tucked among the curls behind an ear. Gaily-coloured feathers on a silver cord; graceful aigrettes, caught -with a jewelled clip; Juliet caps of sequins, or multi-coloured stone bandeaus, and wreaths of pearl shell flowers, include some of the new smart finishes to the evening coiffure. Fragrance, fragility, feminity, are the melodies to which my lady of 1938 will attune her personalify. The robust beauty, with her glowing cheeks, and the dark sophisticated cliarm will be out of date for 1938. Dressmakers and milliners have chosen the early 1900's, the Directoire and. the elegant eighties for their inspirations for the new season's dresses and hats, and so, as it was fashionable in those days to affect an air of delicacy, ihe make-up must suggest fragility and have a clear, dainty appearance in harmony with the extreme femininity of the new costume trend. The wearer's type must be studied in relation to the predominating colour in hat or frock, and make-up chosen to tone with the skin, the colour of the eyes, and the hair. The majority 6t the 1938 costume colours call for the soft blue-xose, shades of rouge and lipstick. Several of them, however, require. shades with an orangey cast. Beauty specialists are busy planning ahead an end-of-summer skin-bleaching campaign, for the new trend in romantic fashions will ■ demand a fair, evenlycoloured complexion. The light, clear shades of powder, which give a fragjle appearance, will be correct, but they must not be so light as to give an unnatural pallor, The powder should match the skin tone, or be a shade ifghter, the idea being to achieve an effect of naturalness. Care must be taken to avoid too light a shade as this gives the skin a chalk-white appearance. This applies to every woman, but particularly to the grey-haired or the older woman, v/hose skin has a tendency to darken with the years. Eyes will need careful make-up, as hats will be so revealing. Eye shadow will be generally used, both for day and evening wear, the shade depending on the colour of the eyes and the frocldng. For instance, a brown-eyed person in -a green ensemble would use either brown or green shadow.

— \ Preparing To Go Out. x It is - quite a simple matter to apply beauty aids when time is no object, but the woman who arrives home from town late in the afternoon and wants to look her best at dinner, must have a deftnite programme of make-up to follow. Six p.m. Nerves out of control, vivacity at a"low ebb, fatigue lines on the face; arriving home at the end of a tiringt day, and faced with an engagement that cannot be avoided. It's an experience that most women have had, so these quick rejuvenation hints will recommend themselves to many. If half an hour is all the time at your disposal,' and you are feeling absolutely "out to it," then a warm bath is indicated. First of all, put your frlction lotion and skin tonic into the refrigerator, then turn on your bath and throw in a generous supply of bath salts or bath ofl. Apart from their delicious perfume,

these beauty aids have the added value of assisting the skin to eliminate waste products from the body. Replace your clothing with a loose wrap, take a few deep breaths at the open window and give your hair a quick, invigorating brushing. If you are afraid to disarrange your wave, then get yourself one of those cute little circular wooden combs (they are sometim^s called scalp stimulators, arid cost only a few p^nce) as they stir up the circulation without disturbing the coiffure to any extent. Any unruly strands of hair can be damped with friction lotion, which, being Iargely alcohol, dries rapidly, and pinned into flat curls. Then slip a net over the hair, pressing the waves into place, and over that place your bath cap. Always wear a waterproof cap when taking a bath, for even though the hair may not get wet, the moist air affects the wave adversely. Circulation Lotions. Now quickly cleanse the face with cleansing cream and apply one of the recommended mask renovators or circulation creams or lotions. The masque removes lines, closes pores, and tightens the skin and should remain on for about 10 minutes, while you lie relaxed in the bath. The circulation application brings the blood flying to the face, and wipes away all the tired lines. Go carefully with circulation pick-ups and only leave them on for a short time for fear of overstimulation, and follow by lots of rich, soothing cream. When your bath is completed, shake your friction lotion, now icy cold from the refrigerator, over your wet sponge, or a pad of wet cotton wool, and" dab all over the body. This is particularly reVivifying on a hot day. Remove your face mask, and pat with the icy skin tonic on cotton wool for two minutes. You'll be surprised at the dewy freshness of your skin. Now begin a careful make-up, as there is nothing as good for your poise as the awareness that your grooming is above reproach. First apply a powder foundation, then paste rouge — a little more than you usually put on for daytime use^-and then eye-shadow, to bring out the colour and depth of your eyes, and make them look larger. Smooth it very sparingly on the upper lid. Use mascara, of course, but don't overdo it. Powder heavily, and dust off the surplus, and finally apply lipstick to shapc your lips. 6.30 p.m. Once. again you are your cliarming, vibrant self. Roughened Skins. Although the wintry weather has departed, the cold, dull days have left their mark on our skins, and it will require a good, rousing beauty treatment to give them a well-cared-for appearance. During the winter months the skin becomes tired, and relaxes, and it needs a spring cleaning to prepare, it for the coming summer. Dry sensitive skins often become cracked and yellowish, and they need a treatment, which will not only nourish them, but will bleach them as well. For this purpose a cream can be made at home from cocoa butter and lanoline. Take equal parts of each, melt them so that they will rnix, and then add the juice of half a lemon for each tablespoonful of the mixture. First, tharoughly cleanae the *kia with

almond oil, then wipe it as free from the oil as is possible and spread the cocoa butter cream evenly over the face and neck. Allow it to remain on the skin for at least a quarter of an hour, and then thoroughly remove with. skin tissues. Now soak a piece of cotton wool in skin tonic and slap the face vigorously with it. This treatment, if carried out twice a week, will have a very invigorating effect on the skin, and after a few weeks a distinct improvemnt should be noticeable. Of course, if the skin is sallow because of imperfect health, no amount of treatment will cause any improvement, and the internal derangement be attended to before applying external remedies.

If there is any doubt about the choico of a skin tonic, you will find that witch hazel is as good as any, and its action is mild and gentle and not at all irritating. Kiss Curls Again. Kiss curls and curls of the corkscrew variety reappear in romantic looking hairdressing styles. Those ultra sleek, close-to-the-head coiffures siniply don't go with the really feminine clothes we shall be wearing in the coming ■ months. Ringlets are particularly demanded by evening modes and to add to their suggestion of Victorian coyness, a little group of flowers or ostrich tips are used as topknots.
