"PARENTS' DAY"
Ceremony at Hastings West School DANCING AND DRILL Congratulations to the school on the excelient standard of work achieved during a broken year by th© pupil?, wer© extended by the chairman of tb° committee, Mr. L. J. Mackersey, Parents' Pay at the Hastings West School yesterday afternoon. There was a pleasing attendance of parents at the ceremony. i Displays of folk dancing and pliysical drili were given by the pupils before a short address by Mr. Mackersey and the lieadmaster, Mr. W. J, Driller Well-drilled in their display, the children created a favourable impression of the spectators, who applauded heartily. Mr. Driller referred to the fact that the school year had been shoiter than usual owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic at the beginning of the year. and extended his thanks to the parents and the committee for the interest they had displayed in the school during the year, which was reflected in the encouraging attendance at ttie ceremony. The year lmd been emiuently successiul in spite of the break, and tbe standard of work had been high. In the sixth standard there had been exceptional difficillty in deciding the position of dux, jvhich had been tied for by a boy and a girl. The runner-up and several pupils were eeparated from 'tbe leaders by. a matter of a few marks only, the excellence of the class work being in the main due to their master. Mr. Bradley. Mr. . Mackersey endorsed the headmaster's remarks regarding the standard of work, and read an apology from Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Maddison, both of whorn were unable to be present. He als.o read to parents the inspector's report on the school' s work during the year. Dux prizes were presented to Alison Thorp .and Balfour Dingwell, with Beatrice Sisson runner-up. Displays of the school class work were on view for the parents in the class rooms, with a fine display of art work in the corridor. On the school grounds were etalls ,!to raise school funds, and the visitors were also entertained to afternoon tea. Those who assisted with the stalls were: Misses Frude, Lanskovski, and Tait, Mesdames E. Clarke, Harvey, Mackersey, Treacher, McKee, Miller, Uoiello, Chapman, Matthews, and YVesterman, and Mr. L. A. Miller.
