World Statistics World employment and nnemployment statistics for the third quarter of 1937, which have just been compiled by the International Labour 0ffi.ee, disclose that in nearly all countries industry is rapidly absorbing the bulk of the unemployed. Thirteen countries, the employment statistics show, now have more p'ersons in jobs than at the peak of the prosperity period in 1929. On a basis of 1929 equalling 100, Estonia has 149.4 per cent.; Denmark, 13'6,9; the TJnion of South Africa, 132.7; Japan, 127.8; Sweden, 119.3; Great Britain, 113.2; Hungary, 107.2; Norway, 107.0; Italy, 106.1; and Canada, 100.7. Percentages given for other countries are: Belgium, 96.8; Poland, 91.1; Belgium, 90.6; the Netherlands, 81.4; Franee, 80.7; Switzerland, 79.0; Luxemburg, 78.2; and the United States, 97.1 per cent.
