Bill Passed By House MAORI VOTING METHODS
(By Telegraph—
WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Houise of Representatives to-day proceeded with consideration of Ihe committee stages of the Electoral xVmendment Bill. Speaking on the method of Maori voting, Hon. J. G. Coates ' suggested that, instead of requiring Maoris to cross out the names not desired on the ballot paper, they Should be allowed to put a cross or a mark against the name of the candidate whose election was desired. The Attorney-General (Hon. H. G. R. Mason) said no ballot papers Were invalid where the selection of a candidate was clearly indicated. The cross • or a mark suggested by Mr. Coates would clearly indicate the candidate desired, and the ballot paper, therefore, would be quite valid. Mr. A. F. Moncur said he considered that the majority of the Maoris wera now quite well enougn. educated to know how to vote. The Bill passed the committee stages, was. read a third time and passed.
