Fair Rents Provision Passed

; WELLINGTON^ Last Night. ■ The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m., when Hon. W. Perry reported that an agreement had been reached betvreen the representatives of the Council and the House xegarding an amendment to the "Whangarei Airport Bill. The subclause deleted by the Council was to be Teinstated and words added to provide that the Airport Board could not delegate powers to a committee to spend money unless a* member of the board was on the committee. The amendment was agreed to. Continuing the debate on the Finance Bill, Hon. J. K. Archer referred to the clause amending the Fair Rents Act a»d. said that the law was not made for the righteous mad", and righteous landlords and tenants would continue as if the law was unaltered. The amendment was unuecessa^y ro protecC ccnunts those not prepared to act justly. Hon. J. McLeod expressed the view that rent restrictions wero cheeking private building, and said he doubted if the check given to building was justified for the sake of protecting rare cases of hardship. The Leader of the Council (Hon. M. Fagan) said Ihe clause did not apply to houses not alrcadv under the provisions of the Fair Eents Act. Conscquently, anyone who wished to do so could build houses, lot them, 'and recover possession in the ordinary way. When the Bill was considered in committee the clause was opposed, and Hons. AUon, Burns, Hayward, McLeod, Perry, Rhodes, Russell, Snodgrass and Ward voted against it, but it was adopted by 17 votes to 9. The Bill was passed and thc Council adjourned at 4.?U p.m.
